Teapots losing their battle against the teabag

The great institution of the teapot is under threat according to the latest research, as more and more are opting to drop a tea bag into a mug to make their daily brew.

The latest figures from high street giant Debenhams has revealed that in the past 5 years, the demand for teapots in their stores has halved.

At the same time, with their being 165m cups of tea being consumed every day in the UK, the demand for their mugs has trebled, which suggests that more people than every before are choosing this particular vessel to drink their tea from. Traditionalists are now warning that this trend could well see the ritual of tea drinking from a pot becoming a thing of the past.

Liz Brewer is an etiquette expert, and she says that as tea is the most quintessentially British of all our drinks, the act of drinking tea in one of our oldest and greatest traditions. She added that we must fight to preserve this custom that for centuries has been the epitomy of polite society in Britain, hallmarked by the tea being poured into a china cup from a teapot, as opposed to a teabag in a mug.

Debenhams has now launched a campaign aimed at ?Civilised Tea Drinking?, which is to encourage people to pour their tea from a teapot as opposed to a mug. The head of home design for Debenhams is Alison Hill, and she has said that tea served from a pot has always been a big feature of British life, and apart from being a pivotal part of family life in Britain, a cup of tea has helped many through some very hard times
