Lopez Denies ?secret Wedding? To Smart

Jennifer Lopez has dismissed reports she?s secretly wed her toyboy lover Casper Smart.
The superstar found a photo of herself on the cover of this week?s Star magazine alongside the headline, ?J.Lo Married in Mexico!?.

The accompanying article alleges the singer/actress married dancer Smart in a low-key ceremony onboard a yacht ? with no guests in attendance. The story also suggested Lopez had signed a prenuptial agreement promising her new husband $1 million a year for the next decade.

But Lopez ? who split from her third husband, salsa singer Marc Anthony, last summer- has brushed off the new tabloid claims.

In a Twitter.com post on Thursday, she writes, ?I keep seeing something about getting married. Surprise, surprise ?they? are wrong?AGAIN. #boredtweet?.

It?s the second time Lopez has had to deny rumors she?s heading down the aisle again ? last week, she shut down false allegations claiming she had asked fashion designer Roberto Cavalli to create a new wedding dress, insisting the style guru?s Twitter.com page had been hacked.

Myanmar will allow US, EU monitors for April vote

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? Myanmar's president confirmed Wednesday that his country will allow some foreign election observers, including from the United States and Europe, to monitor next month's polls, considered a crucial test of reforms he has taken in the military-dominated country.

Myanmar President Thein Sein, making an official visit to Cambodia, said each of the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations would be allowed to send two official delegates to watch the April 1 by-elections, according to Cambodian government spokesman Khieu Kanharith.

Khieu Kanharith cited Thein Sein telling Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen that ASEAN's so-called dialogue partners ? Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia and the United States ? would also each be invited to send a small delegation, as would ASEAN's own administrative office.

It was not immediately clear what sort of access would be granted to the observers, but their invitation is considered a breakthrough. Myanmar's former ruling junta had rejected international bids to observe the last two elections, in 2010 and 1990.

The National League for Democracy, Myanmar's main opposition party led by Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, has expressed concern about the possibility of electoral fraud. The party solidly won the 1990 elections but was never allowed to take office, and it boycotted the 2010 elections as neither free nor fair. Its participation in the April vote is seen as an endorsement of the reforms Thein Sein has undertaken since taking office last year.

Khieu Kanharith said Thein Sein had asked Hun Sen for information on its experiences with foreign election observers and the Cambodian leader agreed he would send some documents on the subject. Hun Sen, like Thein Sen, has been accused of using the democratic process to front for authoritarian rule.

Thein Sein leads an army-backed party that won a landslide of seats in the 2010 polls. Although he has taken reform measures such as easing limits on the press and freeing political prisoners since taking office a year ago, he rules under a constitution that ensures that the military retains the dominant role in politics.

ASEAN had said Tuesday poll watchers from regional countries were invited, and the U.S. Embassy in Myanmar confirmed the expanded invitation Wednesday.

"We are encouraged that the authorities have invited international representatives as observers, including from ASEAN, the EU and the United States," embassy spokeswoman Adrienne Nutzman told The Associated Press. She said an invitation was sent to Washington.

"It's notable that the Burmese government will also allow some journalists from these countries to observe the process, demonstrating increased openness to the foreign media," Nutzman said. The U.S. government refers to Myanmar by its old name, Burma.

She declined to give details of how many American monitors would be allowed and if the U.S. had accepted the invitation, referring further questions to Washington.

The April by-election is being held to fill 48 parliamentary seats vacated over the past year.

Suu Kyi, a former political prisoner, is running for one of the seats in parliament and has generated enormous support for her party in a nationwide campaign tour. If Suu Kyi wins, she would have a voice in government for the first time after decades as the country's iconic opposition leader.

The United States and other countries have said they will wait to see if the by-elections are free and fair before they consider lifting political and economic sanctions imposed against the former military regime.

Lee Crockett: The Bottom Line: How Investing in Our Fisheries Pays ...

Sometimes, an idea comes forward in Washington that actually brings together people who normally disagree. The Fisheries Investment and Regulatory Relief Act (FIRRA) of 2012 does that and more. This bipartisan bill would provide financial support to fishermen and improve management of our oceans. Restoring our depleted fish populations would create jobs, protect existing ones, and add billions to the U.S. economy.

After decades of working with some of America's leading commercial and recreational fishing groups, I've found that although we might differ on how our marine resources should be managed, we are on common ground when it comes to the need for dedicated funding for sound science and management.

On March 12, 2012, Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine), John D. Rockefeller (D-WV), Scott Brown (R-MA) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) introduced the FIRRA (S.2194). Reps. Barney Frank (D-MA) and Frank Guinta (R-NH) are expected to introduce a companion bill in the House. This bill would redirect approximately $100 million in existing funds from duties on imported fish products each year to key programs that are critical to sustainably managing marine resources and aiding the fishermen and communities dependent on them. And a growing chorus of voices from around the country -- including the Pew Environment Group -- is speaking up in support of this much-needed legislation.

In 2011, Pew joined 246 groups and businesses in signing a letter asking Congress to place a priority on funding for fisheries data collection in fiscal year 2012. We also met with congressional staff members and delivered photos of constituents from around the country and all walks of life, demonstrating the diversity of people who view funding for fisheries data collection and science as a good investment.

Although annual appropriations are critically important, we also need stable, dedicated funding to uphold the science and management that serve as the foundation of healthy fish populations and thriving businesses. Thanks to the foresight of key congressional leaders, we finally have the opportunity to establish such support with this legislation.

How the Investment Act Would Work

Since 1979, a portion of the duties levied on imported fish products have been transferred into the general operating account of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on an annual basis. The FIRRA would ensure that these funds (which the government estimates at $124 million in the upcoming fiscal year) are used for critical research, monitoring, and management programs, as well as provide valuable assistance to fishermen and their communities.

This bill would create a regionally-based grant program that would direct approximately $70 million a year to vital, regionally important projects. The eight regional fishery management councils would be responsible for identifying investment priorities and recommending grants for each region, ensuring that funds target important regional needs. The remainder of the funds would be available for NOAA to use for special fishery needs and problems, including providing disaster assistance, improving shoreside infrastructure, seafood promotion, and managing highly migratory species such as bluefin tuna.

Projects the Bill Would Fund

Under the new bill, several types of programs would be eligible for funding, among them:

  • Fish stock assessments and analyses, including cooperative surveys involving fishermen and scientists;

  • Data collection for recreational fisheries;

  • Testing and deployment of environmentally friendly fishing gear;

  • Dockside, at-sea, and electronic monitoring and reporting of catch;

  • Assistance to, and investments in, fishermen and their communities;

  • Socioeconomic research; and

  • Habitat restoration and protection.

In other words, the FIRRA would support the scientific research and improved management necessary to help maintain healthy oceans. It would also provide much-needed assistance to coastal communities, ultimately increasing fishing opportunities for everyone in the long run.

(AP) ? A day before the public learned the name of the soldier accused of methodically slaughtering 16 civilians in Afghanistan, his lawyer called a news conference and sketched a different portrait of Robert Bales: that of a loving father and devoted husband who had been traumatized by a comrade's injury and sent into combat one too many times.

The move was classic John Henry Browne. The charming, sometimes brash, media-savvy defense attorney had yet to even meet his client and was already attempting to shape public perceptions.

"His best work is not in a court of law, but really in a court of public opinion. He's a master at humanizing his client, and that's an important role," said Dan Satterberg, chief prosecutor in Seattle's King County, where Browne is based. "He is accessible and quotable. And he loves to talk to the media. He doesn't waste any time getting a positive portrayal of his client."

Six-foot-6 and seven times married, with a penchant for long, white scarves, Browne cuts a flamboyant figure in Seattle legal circles and has represented some notorious criminals, including serial killer Ted Bundy and the teenage thief known as the Barefoot Bandit.

Browne, 65, has obtained remarkable results for some of his clients, but his aggressive courtroom style can also rub prosecutors and judges the wrong way. In a drug case last summer, a mistrial was declared after he questioned the judge's competence in open court and a juror was overheard saying he wanted to punch the lawyer in the nose.

His new client, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, a 38-year-old Army sniper from Washington state, could be charged as early as this week in the March 11 shooting rampage, a crime that has strained relations between the U.S. and Afghanistan and threatened to alter the course of the war.

Browne met with Bales for the first time Monday, conferring with him behind bars at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. While any trial is months away, some wonder whether the lawyer's sometimes abrasive manner will sit well with the more formal culture of a military court, where the jury consists entirely of soldiers.

By his own count, Browne has appeared in military court only three times in a career of more than four decades.

"He pushes prosecutors and judges, and his success is partially due to that," said John Wolfe, who worked for Browne in the 1970s. "His zealousness can cause people to make mistakes." But he added: "I fully expect he's going to adapt his style to the decorum required in a military trial."

Allen Ressler, a Seattle attorney who went to American University Law School with Browne and was his law partner years ago, put it this way: "He's not always the most pleasant human being in the world, but he knows what he needs to do to get results."

Browne has been known to turn around in court and roll his eyes if he dislikes what he is hearing from the judge. In the drug case that ended in a mistrial, he simply refused to continue participating because he disagreed with several rulings. He sat down and did the same thing in a 1979 murder case.

"He makes harsh statements sometimes, statements some people feel might be disrespectful," Wolfe said. "If he thinks a judge is out of line, he'll say, 'You're out of line.' He is passionate about his defense work, and when he thinks it's appropriate, he'll call a spade a spade."

Though friendly with reporters, Browne can at times be prickly with them, and isn't above calling one a "pest" for telephoning too often.

Several colleagues say that he clearly enjoys the publicity from big cases but that his real motivation lies deeper, in a belief in his clients and their right to a fair trial.

"John has always had high-profile cases because he's really good," said Anne Bremner, a Seattle lawyer who was Browne's fifth wife. "But often in high-profile cases, they can be a platform for important discussions on broad issues. Being part of that public discussion and potential institutional changes is important to him."

On Tuesday, Browne suggested the Bales case could become a platform, too. He said there are legal, social and political issues connected to the case and how it will be prosecuted.

"I'm not putting the war on trial," he said, "but the war is on trial."

Most recently, Browne represented Colton Harris-Moore, the Barefoot Bandit who stole airplanes, boats and cars during a two-year run from the law. By portraying the thief as someone who had been neglected as a boy, Browne and his co-counsel persuaded a judge to give Harris-Moore a prison term at the low end of the sentencing range ? seven years.

Browne was so persuasive the judge called the defendant "a triumph of the human spirit" simply because Harris-Moore grew up to be a thief rather than, say, a serial killer.

One of Browne's biggest cases involved Washington state's worst mass murder, the slaying of 13 people at a Seattle gambling club in 1983. At the end of the trial, Browne had the mother of his client, Benjamin Ng, bow to the jurors and ask them to spare his son from execution, recalled Bremner. Ng was sentenced to life in prison.

In the 1970s, Browne came to represent Bundy when he was under investigation for killings in Washington state. Bundy ultimately confessed to dozens of murders around the country and was executed in Florida's electric chair in 1989.

A Tennessee native, Browne graduated from the University of Denver, then got his law degree in 1971. He worked as an assistant attorney general in Olympia, Wash., and then as chief trial attorney in the public defender's office in Seattle before entering private practice.

He has benefited from the assistance of a series of sharp associate lawyers, most recently Emma Scanlan, who has handled many of the nuts and bolts of their cases while leaving the public pronouncements to him.

So far, Browne is doing a good job countering the portrait of Bales that has emerged in leaks from anonymous U.S. officials, said Dan Conway, a former Marine and a military lawyer. But talking so much about his client ? for example, saying that Bales remembers little about the attack ? is risky, Conway said.

Military investigators have sole access to witnesses in Afghanistan and can start collecting evidence to contradict Browne's suggestion that the shootings may have been what psychiatrists call a dissociative event.

"You want to humanize your client, but you don't want to give away the whole playbook," Conway said.

COMMUNICATIONS ARTICLES ? Kraken Series Smartphone ...

One cannot help but wonder about the imagination of the marketing man or woman who decided to call Trident Case?s new series of cell phone, and smartphone protectors the ?Kraken Series.? A Kraken is a legendary sea monster that was reported to attack Viking ships off the coasts of Norway. Later, historians realized that the Vikings probably weren?t making this sea monster up. The Kraken was none other than the giant squid, which can grow up to 50 feet long and which has been known to attack ships. In contemporary German, ?kraken? is also the word for ?octopus.?

To explain further, Trident Case?s Kraken Series is a group of cellphone, and smartphone and wireless device protector cases that the company has compared to a giant squid. The name implies that the case is dangerous, crafty and versatile. Strangely enough, it might just be the perfect name for these cell phone cases.

The Kraken has many arms ? eight, to be exact. Similarly, the Kraken Series mobile device protective case has many different attachments designed to adapt to various applications. For example, the tripod mount attaches to the back of the case and then allows the user to attach the device to a standard tripod stand.

Besides the tripod mount, the Trident Case Adaptive Modular System, or AMS, includes case attachments for bicycles, backpacks, belts, seat belts and headphones. There?s even a nifty accessory that keeps headphone wires neatly organized and attached to the back of the case. All these Kraken accessories are sold separately, though the case comes standard with a simple phone kickstand.

The AMS wouldn?t be complete without a car mount. As one might expect from a company that names its smartphone cases after sea monsters, the Trident AMS includes some creative ways to mount phones within the car. There?s a windshield mount accessory too, which doubles as a window mount, and there?s also the previously mentioned seat belt clip.

The Trident Case also has an accessory for the Kraken Series that allows phones to be attached to the handlebars of motorcycles, and scooters. Let?s all hope that motorcycle riders use the phone mount only for navigation purposes, rather than texting while biking at the same time.

The Kraken cases and covers Series are designed for cell phone and mobile device users who need the highest level of protection for their mobile devices. Fans of the Kraken Series include police officers, firefighters, construction workers and the parents of toddlers.

To prove just how tough their cell phone and mobile device protector cases are, Trident has a series of videos called ?the tough test?. These include dramatic videos of Blackberries being tossed from the roof of the Trident office building, brand new iPads being doused with a bucket of water, and all types of phones being thrown from moving cars. In other words, Trident argues, if you need a tough case, we?ve got it for you.

In short, the Kraken Series from Trident Case is a durable, adaptable cell phone case that works for all types of phone and mobile device users. With the protective silicon skin lining the inside and the hard plastic shell on the outside, then topped off with the LCD screen protector, the Trident Case Kraken Series can handle all that you can throw at it ? literally.

MyCoolCell has thousands of high quality iphone and ipad accessories at exclusive wholesale prices for resellers such as cases, pouches, skins, kingston memory, batteries, chargers, otterbox, and much more. The mainstream fronts of Synthetic Biology: Guest post

This is a guest post from M. A. Loera S?nchez from the iGEM team UANL 2012. I have carried out a few small grammar edits but otherwise the essay is all his work, and I would like to thank him for the opportunity to host it on my blog. All references are below the main text.

The mainstream fronts of synthetic biology

?What I cannot build, I cannot understand?.

This phrase by the genius physicist Richard Feynman is cleverly encrypted into the genetic code of the first bacterial cells with an artificial genome that have ever existed.

Actually the quote says ?what I cannot create??, but maybe the scientists at the JCVI ?who are behind this tremendous breakthrough- preferred to save some base pairs to avoid the use of the word ?create? and its tricky implications.?They published this work in 2010 and opened a whole new world of possibilities and made it completely clear to anyone what we mean when we talk about Synthetic Biology and what its ultimate purpose should be: to understand life by building it.

Although the term ?Synthetic Biology? has been around since the mid-1970s, the definition of it has been very vague: some people would call Synthetic Biology anything related to general genetic engineering procedures; others, perhaps more rightfully, would claim to be doing Synthetic Biology because of working with DNA synthesis or making bacteria behave like tiny computers. Even the 2010 report by the US Presidencial Comission for the Study of Bioethical Issues has to define the term considering different points of view (that of the molecular biology, the chemist and the engineer) and states that the activities related to Synthetic Biology are considered by some to be just extensions of already existing fields, like Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering and Microbiology.

I remember (oh, the shame!) being skeptic about the possibility of something so oxymoronic being, well? true. I still turn red when I recall that I kind of corrected the person who first said ?Synthetic Biology? to me by telling her that what she wanted to say was maybe Systems Biology.

So what is it really?

Well, my work in Bio! has been devoted to dig into the deeps of Synthetic Biology and the iGEM competition, and throughout this time I began to notice what I would call ?the mainstream fronts of Synthetic Biology?. These are the main orientations that so called Synthetic Biology projects would take and by enlisting them, I think it will be easier to clarify the distinctive characteristics of this field.

Front 1: DNA synthesis

The development of DNA synthesis techniques allows us now to synthesize DNA sequences larger than just PCR oligos; genes and genomes are being fully synthesized; difficult constructions are eased by just synthesizing the needed sequences, without needing sub-clonations to gain a useful restriction site. One of the most awesome accomplishment is the generation of the first replicating cells with a fully synthetic genome, which by the way was dubbed ?Synthia?.?Moreover, one of the most amazing applications of synthesized DNA has little to do with living cells: they are used as mechanical pieces, because after all DNA is a physical entity and can be used as such, giving place for the field of DNA Nanostructures.

A particular technique called ?DNA origami? has been really fruitful (ref1) Since the publication of its invention in 2006, DNA origami custom structures have been employed as mechanical and computational devices; there is software available for generating the DNA sequence needed to construct a wanted shape. More recently, DNA origami structures have been employed as intelligent devices that recognize and deliver drugs to cancerous cells.

Front 2: The standardization school and the iGEM competition

The iGEM logo

One of the characteristics of gene cloning is the messy and sui generis protocols that vary from lab to lab and from construction to construction. What would happen if these procedures were standardized, so that any construction needed could be accomplished by anyone with the same steps and same restriction enzymes?

A group at MIT has been dedicated for the last years to standardization in the biological field. The main drive is to accelerate the development of Biology by mimicking the development ofthe engineering fields, i.e. to have a consensus analogous to what mechanical engineers have with the size of materials and tools. Moreover, if we are using standard parts, the quantitative characterization of them would be also facilitated, making mathematical models and simulations useful as predictive tools.

Accordingly, there is the Registry for Standard Biological Parts, which is basically a collection of DNA sequences that share a particular set of rules that ease their combination with each other. Each of these sequences is a biological part and among the existing parts are promoters, ribosomal binding sites, coding genes and also composite parts made of the combination of single parts; the parts are also referred as ?BioBricks? and the organism in which they are meant to work is termed the ?chassis?.

The fundamental characteristic of BioBricks is the set of rules that ease their combination; these rules allow the concatenation of DNA sequences by iteratively using the same restriction enzymes in the same order. The basics of this technique are the design of idempotent vectors and were first presented by the Knight group at MIT.

The huge potential of the use of BioBricks is reflected by the number of awesome and creative projects that have been presented at the International Engineered Machine competetion (iGEM), which began at the MIT too.?In this competition, undergraduate students are challenged to make the most innovative biological machine by using BioBricks. Among the projects that have been presented since the first iGEM edition are biosensors, bioremediators, light-controlled cells, metabolically engineered cells, synthetic genetic circuits and many others, along with their corresponding mathematical models. Students are also encouraged to make a contribution for the humanities side of the project.

Front 3: Genetic code expansion

There are many amino acids that would give proteins many useful characteristics, but in nature, only twenty amino acids are commonly encoded by the 64 codons found in living beings, plus some organisms that also encode some rare amino acids like pyrrolysine and selenocysteine.

What can be done to exploit all the chemical potential found in the so called unnatural amino acids??One approach would be to chemically incorporate the unnatural amino acids into already existing proteins, but this method is highly unspecific and may have a low efficiency; the ideal way would be to incorporate those unnatural amino acids at the very moment when the wanted protein is translated from its mRNA.

This is actually possible by using orthogonal translation systems and expanded genetic codes.?The common 64-codon/20-amino acids genetic code has been expanded to 64-codon/21-amino acids and even 65-codon/21-amino acids, with one codon adapted for an unnatural amino acid. (refs 2 and 3)

The system behind the incorporation of this unnatural amino acid is the presence of a tRNA and an aminoacyl tRNA-transferase (AARS) enzyme from a phylogenetically distant organism; both the tRNA and the AARS have been modified to recognize the unnatural amino acid by directed evolution. Because of the phylogenetic distance with the host machinery, the AARS would charge the unnatural amino acid into the tRNA without interfering with the native tRNAs and AARS from the host, i.e. they would be an orthogonal translation system.

The remaining piece is the codon that would code for the unnatural amino acid. In Escherichia coli, the amber codon (UAG) is the least frequent codon found in its genes, so it has been commonly employed to be recognized by the orthogonal tRNA without having a gross effect on the growth rate of the bacteria. Nevertheless, custom codons have also been generated; most interestingly,?four-nucleotide codons have proven to be functional.

Unnatural amino acids in proteins have been used as sites for chemical synthesis (the presence of some chemical groups in the unnatural amino acid increases the efficiency and specificity for some procedures, like click chemistry), so that many different active compounds can be conjugated. In this way, proteins conjugated with fluorescent probes, FRET pairs and poly ethylene glycol have been generated. Also, by incorporating phosphorylated residues, it has been possible to hack the normal signal transduction systems in cells. Finally, recently, genetic code expansion has been used to make ?oligobodies?, a mix of DNA oligos and antibodies.

Front 4: Synthetic genetic circuits

If the intricate regulation of gene expression can be broken down to a number of basic processes, then by understanding these basic processes, we should be able to eventually understand what happens when they are combined and how they can make a full gene regulation mechanism.

The generation of synthetic circuits like switches and oscillators in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells has been an exciting matter of study that has brought together mathematicians, computer scientists, molecular biologists and engineers.?Switch-like genetic circuit behavior has been attained by using riboswitches, engineered promoter sites and transcription factors that respond to a particular stimulus, like light or some chemical compounds.

The conception and mathematical study of synthetic oscillating genetic circuits have been active since the early 1960s, but it has not been until recently that in vivo experiments have validated those idealizations. A considerable amount of effort has been dedicated to the mathematical characterization, simulation and in vivo implementation of oscillating genetic circuit topologies.

Synthetic genetic circuits have been employed to elucidate natural circuits by rewiring them or inducing ?short circuits? into signaling cascades; properly functioning basic synthetic genetic circuits are the key for composite synthetic systems, like logic gates and synthetic?signalling?cascades.

Front 5: Metabolic Engineering

The realization that for Metabolic Engineering it was not enough to just mix existing genes to rewire biosynthetic pathways is perhaps the main reason why some Metabolic Engineering studies are considered to be also part of Synthetic Biology.?The holistic understanding of metabolic flux, promoter activity, preferential codons and scaffold proteins are the basics for Synthetic Metabolic Engineering.

One of the seminal studies was that from the Keasling group, who rewired E. coli with asynthetic metabolic pathway that leads to the production of a precursor of an anti-malarial drug, artemisinin. The field has developed to include also biofuel biosynthetic pathways. (ref 5 and 6)

Another approach for Synthetic Metabolic Engineering, also developed by the Keasling group, is the use of synthetic protein scaffolds. These synthetic scaffolds are made by natural protein binding domains from phylogenetically distant organisms; a synthetic scaffold contains a number of different binding domains. When a set of enzymes from a particular metabolic pathway is genetically conjugated with a ligand domain ? each enzyme with a different ligand domain- they will attach to the synthetic scaffold in an ordered pattern. The synthetic scaffold acts then as a spatial anchor for the metabolic pathway that can greatly alter the metabolic flux towards a desired product.

One interesting derivation of the scaffold concept was developed by team Slovenia in the iGEM 2009. Instead of using proteins as scaffolds, the team used a DNA molecule to recruit the enzymes of the metabolic pathway; this was possible by genetically conjugating the enzymes to a DNA binding domain from a phylogenetically distant transcription factors. Thus, the DNA-binding enzymes would attach to their recognition sites in a synthetic DNA construct and enhance metabolic flux through a biosynthetic pathway.

Closing remarks

With the enumeration of the main Synthetic Biology fronts:
1) DNA synthesis
2) biological parts standardization
3) genetic code expansion
4) synthetic genetic circuits
5) metabolic engineering,
it can be seen that something that all the projects share is the drive to gain an increasingly precise control over cellular processes, considering ground elements ?i.e., custom DNA sequences, custom proteins produced by genetic code expansion, standard biological parts and basic synthetic circuits- but also higher-order elements ?composite synthetic circuits and engineered metabolic pathways.

The degree and the tools with which Synthetic Biology intends and is actually beginning to control cellular processes are what distinguish it from any other field of the biological sciences.

Synthetic Biology is a fast growing and productive field. There is indeed a lot to do, particularly regarding to the precise quantitative characterization of biological parts and circuits; but since the field is attracting many smart and active young minds from different disciplines, the growth and innovation rate will likely increase in the years to come.

Why Dating For Boomers Is Easier Than Ever ...

You have no doubt heard the words uttered in radio, on TV and in the media in general ? red is the new black, or how nasty is the new nice or even better ? boomers are the new seniors. Seems fitting in a day and age where 60 was once considered old, but with people living into their 80?s and 90?s what is considered senior? Boomers are also not willing to sit back, and relax ? they are taking the world by storm and are living life fuller than you or I may ever! There was a time, not that long ago that when you divorced, or your spouse or significant other passed away you committed yourself to a life of celibacy, or at least living alone Some boomers still practice those sentiments but there is a growing population of boomers that are not willing to sit back and let their kids dictate what they can or can?t do and they certainly are not willing to live alone any longer.Consider that most people are living into their 80?s and longer ? if your spouse dies in their 50?s or 60?s there is the possibility that their partner will be along for 10, 20 or even 30 years. Some people may make the adjustment ? but it will be difficult.Increasingly more and more boomers are trading in their wheelchairs, and memberships to retirement villas for something more exciting.I?ve spoken to hot-grandmas (as they like to be called) that have forgone the rocking chair and being the stereotypical grandma to one that goes on exotic vacations, and goes scuba diving, hot-air balooning, and even snowboarding! These boomers also reject the idea of spending the remaining years alone. They are on the look out for partners that fit their lifestyle and want to have fun. However many are not willing to hit the singles bars just yet and prefer the anonymity that the Internet offers them.In recent years, there has been a marked increase in online dating services geared towards seniors meeting seniors (or boomers meeting boomers). These services boast memberships in the tens of thousands, and there are members from all over the world allowing a variety of people to choose from. With a number of companies offering services to boomers, its clear to see that this demographic is upfront and center in many companies growth strategy and as a result they are building services that will cater to this growing (or booming ? pun intended) segment of the population.

Half-million pack Dublin for St. Patrick's Day

DUBLIN (AP) ? An estimated half-million people crowded Saturday into central Dublin to view the St. Patrick's Day parade, a focal point for Irish celebrations worldwide and the start of the tourist season in debt-battered Ireland.

Bands from Britain, the United States and Russia joined thousands of Irish volunteers on Saturday's two-hour procession down Dublin's major boulevard, O'Connell Street, across the River Liffey, past Trinity College and concluding outside St. Patrick's Cathedral.

In his St. Patrick's Day message, Catholic Cardinal Sean Brady offered prayers to the estimated 50,000 citizens who have emigrated in the past year to escape Ireland's weak economy.

Unemployment stands at 14.4 percent despite the resumption of emigration at levels last seen in the 1980s. Ireland has been forced to raise taxes and slash spending for four straight years and since 2011 has been dependent on foreign loans to pay its government bills.

Seventeen government ministers have left Ireland this week to lobby 15 countries for increased investment and tourism. Prime Minister Enda Kenny is grand marshal of Saturday's parade in Chicago.

"I am keenly aware of the huge numbers who have emigrated from Ireland in recent times, especially those who felt they had no choice," said Brady, spiritual leader of 4 million Catholics in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

"May the memory of St. Patrick, who was himself carried off from his homeland at the age of 16, sustain all those who have left our shores for other lands," Brady said, referring to the saint's legendary background as a slave imported from Britain. "May the example of Patrick's faith in God, who comforted and protected him, protect and comfort them also."

The Catholic Church in Ireland also launched an online information pack for emigrants.

Brady was presiding Saturday over a special service honoring both St. Patrick and the Vatican's new diplomat to Ireland, New York-born Archbishop Charles Brown. At a service in Armagh, Ireland's ecclesiastical capital located in Northern Ireland, the two men planned to bless sprigs of shamrock for the congregation and then take part in Armagh's own parade.

Saturday's Dublin parade is just one of more than 50 across Ireland, many of them rowdy village affairs. The capital is also running a four-day St. Patrick's Festival through Monday that features live performances and amusement park rides in several parts of the city center, although the fireworks show has been canceled, another casualty of austerity.

The city's two most popular tourist attractions, the Guinness brewery and Dublin Zoo, both offered nods to the day's mix of patriotism and partying. Zoo animals were being fed special mixes of oranges and vegetables, mimicking the green and orange of the Irish flag, while Guinness was offering free admission to any visitors named Patrick.

(AP) ? Tweaking Republicans four days before the Illinois primary, President Barack Obama said Friday that the hopefuls campaigning to take his job would do well to channel the moderation and inclusiveness of the Land of Lincoln.

"I'm thinking maybe some Lincoln will rub off on them while they're here," Obama told a lunchtime fundraiser in Chicago.

Obama also noted the barrage of attack ads the primary season has unleashed and said they're not exactly appealing to ? in Lincoln's famous words ? "the better angels of our nature."

The nation's first Republican president is an oft-mentioned Obama role model, and he began a day of fundraising in Illinois and Georgia by holding Lincoln up as an example to today's conservative GOP field.

"We've got some guests in Illinois this week," Obama noted at a donor event organized by Democratic lawyers. "Apparently they have not wrapped up on the other side."

Obama said Lincoln understood Americans are one nation, and they rise and fall together. He contrasted that with "on-your-own economics" which he says his GOP foes embrace.

While stumping in the state, Obama said he hopes those foes "take a little time to reflect on this great man."

Recalling Lincoln's devotion to education and public transportation, Obama said, "That vision of Lincoln's ? a vision of a big, bold, generous, dynamic, active, inclusive America ? that's the vision that has driven this country for more than 200 years."

Seats at the Chicago fundraiser ranged from $2,500 to $10,000. Campaign officials expected about 600 to attend.

In Atlanta, the Obama campaign's African American Leadership Council was holding a gala at film producer Tyler Perry's studio. Singer Cee Lo Green was expected to perform. General admission tickets were $500. VIP tickets ranged from $2,500 to $10,000. A dinner later at Perry's home was expected to raise $35,800 per guest.

The money is split between the campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
