Users who ask for walking directions from the Shire, where the Hobbits live in J.R.R. Tolkien's novels, to Mordor, home of Sauron, are warned: "Use caution - one does not simply walk into Mordor."
The line is spoken by Boromir in The Lord of the Rings and quickly spread around the internet some years ago, adapted in various in-joke pictures.
The joke comes as the trailer for the new film adaptation of The Hobbit is launched, with the film due to be released next year.
The joke is one of many Google regularly hide on their web pages
Google's websites are well-known for containing 'Easter eggs' - jokes hidden by software engineers in pages for users to discover.
Earlier this week, Google users discovered a festive trick on their screens, activated by searching for 'let it snow' in Firefox or Chrome browsers.
The screen then fills up with snow and gradually becomes completely white, until the defrost button is hit.
