Sin?ad O'Connor sports grey hair and tired expression after glamorous wedding in Las Vegas

By Andrea Magrath

She looked radiant, on top of the world and very pretty in her long strapless pink dress as she married for the fourth time in Las Vegas.

But not long after announcing that the union had come to an end after just 16 days, Sinead O'Connor emerged from her house looking tired, stressed and grey-haired.

Gone was the pretty frock and instead she came to the door in nothing but a towel before hurriedly changing into a T-shirt and jeans.

Radiant: Sinead O'Connor glowed with happiness as she married Barry Herridge in Las Vegas... but she looked much different emerging from her house not long after announcing the union had ended after just 16 days

Over before it started: Sinead was snapped at the door of her home in Bray in a bath towel, after admitting her marriage begun to unravel within three hours of the ceremony

The singer announced on Boxing Day that her 'dream' fourth marriage, to youth counsellor Barry Herridge, had ended after just 16 days.

The 45-year-old revealed on her website that the marriage was in trouble just three hours after the Las Vegas ceremony, when people close to her 38-year-old husband tried to ?kybosh? it.

But despite the brevity of the union, it could take years for the marriage to be legally dissolved, with Irish law requiring a four-year separation.

Long road ahead: Sin?a O'Connor announced the end of her 16-day marriage this week, however according to Irish law a divorce will only be granted after a four-year separation

Wedded bliss: Sin?ad announced the end of her 16-day marriage this week, however according to Irish law a divorce will only be granted after a four-year separation

Sin?ad posted a statement on her personal website stating that she had decided to end the marriage on Christmas Eve after just seven days of domesticity.

She wrote: ?There was intense pressure placed upon him by certain people in his life, not to be involved with me. These were people who had never met me but had formed opinions of me based on what they read about ?Sin?ad O?Connor? in the media, etc?.

'They must be separated for four years and only then can they apply to have the marriage dissolved'

But she admitted that her husband had also been very upset by a ?wild ride? they took to try and buy marijuana on their wedding night, as she doesn?t drink alcohol.??

?My husband was enormously wounded and very badly affected by that experience and also by the attitude of those close to him toward our marriage,? she said.

Miss O?Connor?s and Mr Herridge flew out to Las Vegas on her 45th birthday and married that day.

But despite its apparent spontaneity, the couple will now have to wait four years to legally end their brief union.

The Little White Wedding chapel confirmed to the Mail that the marriage certificate the couple signed was a legally binding contract.?

Brief: The 45-year-old singer revealed on her website that the marriage was in trouble just three hours after the Las Vegas ceremony, when people close to her 38-year-old husband tried to ?kybosh? it

According to a staff member, both Miss O?Connor and Mr Herridge were made aware of the implications of the ceremony before they tied the knot. And a spokesman from the Las Vegas church confirmed that the couple would have to take legal action to dissolve the wedding.?

She said: ?All of our ceremonies are legally binding. Occasionally, we do get couples who renew their vows. But they are the only two types of service that we do. We can?t comment on any individual weddings but all the processes are legally binding. They are made aware of that when they decide to marry with us.?

?

Marianna Fritz, a consultant with Irish Divorce Services, said the couple would be forced to wait at least four years before applying to terminate the marital contract.

?It doesn?t matter whether you get married in Las Vegas, Australia or Ireland ? the procedure is the same,? said Miss Fritz.

?It doesn?t matter whether you get married in Las Vegas, Australia or in Ireland - The procedure is the same?

?First, they must be separated for four years and only then can they apply to have the marriage dissolved and, at that point, it is relatively straightforward.?

Alternatively, Miss O?Connor and Mr Herridge could apply to have the marriage annulled ? that is, to have it declared legally void, as if it had never happened. But according to Miss Fritz this is an extremely difficult and costly procedure.

?They are entitled to apply, but with an annulment, you must use solicitors which is an extremely costly avenue. It is also very difficult, as there are only three, maybe four conditions that a court will accept. If either party is intoxicated or under the influence of any substances. Or if they can prove that they aren?t in a sane state of mind. Or if one of the parties is homosexual.

?Basically, once the couple have consummated the marriage it is not easy to have it annulled.?

Miss O?Connor was not at her seafront home in Bray, Co. Wicklow, yesterday. However, she posted a humorous message on her front door stating: ?Dearest loving hacks. This is your quote: rock?n?roll.?

The wedding to Mr Herridge was to be the fairy-tale ending to the singer?s search for love, which she launched last summer across Twitter and on The Late Late Show, even attending the annual matchmaking festival in Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare.

'Wild ride': O'Connor revealed a 'wild' journey she took on their wedding night in search of marijuana 'as she doesn't drink' wounded her husband

Then the singer shocked the nation by writing a series of candid blogs on her website, detailing what she was looking for in a man.

She wrote in September that she was in ?desperate need of a very sweet, sex-starved man,? but specified that he ?must be no younger than 44, must not be named Brian or Nigel, must be blind enough to think I?m gorgeous, has to be employed and he has to like his mother.?

Inundated with thousands of replies, Miss O?Connor selected just one man to go on a date with ? her future husband.

?Barry sent me this wonderful email, which just took my heart away. It had to be him,? said the mother of four.

Originally from Donaghmede, north Dublin, but now living in nearby Raheny, Mr Herridge revealed the contents of the email that kickstarted the relationship.

?I was getting off a train at Connolly Station one morning when I saw this woman acting strangely on the platform. At first I didn?t know what she was doing and then I realised she was playing hopscotch. It wasn?t Sin?ad but a businesswoman in a suit and in her 30s, just having a bit of fun.?

Legally binding: A spokesperson for the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas confirmed that the couple would have to take legal action to dissolve the wedding

He added: ?I wondered why more women that age weren?t doing the same thing. And it struck me that this was exactly what Sin?ad was doing with her search for love, having fun, and I told Sin?ad about this woman in my first email.?

The story struck a chord with Miss O?Connor, who invited the paediatric psychotherapist out on a date last August. A coffee shop on Dublin?s South William Street was the setting for their first face-to-face meeting and it was love at first sight.

On December 7, the couple announced their intention to marry, using the Today FM Breakfast Show to get the happy news out to the nation.

The singer kept the happy news quiet when she appeared on the Ian Dempsey programme the previous day, telling him she had no gossip to share. But Barry rang the show on Wednesday morning to let the cat out of the bag.?

Dempsey wrote on his Twitter page: ?So Sin?ad O?Connor was holding back yesterday. Boyfriend Barry Herridge got back to us today to reveal that they will wed tomorrow. ?And it?s Sin?ad?s birthday tomorrow too. Congrats to them both. And Sin?ad?s new album is sounding great too.?

'Intense pressure': The singer blamed Herridge's friends for reacting negatively to their sudden union

Annulment unlikely: Divorce specialists say only three or four conditions will be accepted by a court in order to grant a costly annulment and if the marriage is consummated it is highly unlikely

But by St Stephen?s Day, the controversial singer was composing a letter to break the news of her fourth marriage?s failure ? to forestall, she said, another version leaking out.

She said she had decided to split with Mr Herridge as she couldn?t stand to see his life and career ruined through his association with her.

?It became apparent to me that if he were to stay with me he would be losing too much to bear. And that being with me was not going to serve him positively, career wise or any other wise.?

She added; ?I saw his life leave him because of how people close to him reacted. And I can?t take anyone?s life. And a woman wants to be a joy to her husband. So, you love someone? Set them free. He is a wonderful man. I love him very much. I?m sorry I?m not a more regular woman.?

She also vowed not to let her latest failed relationship get her down. ?The marriage was 16 days. We lived together for 7 days only. Until Xmas eve. And we haven?t been awful to each other. I am in a good place in life. And happy. As my good friend said ?Well, at least you got married in Vegas in a pink Cadillac! Can?t get more Rock?n?Roll than that.??

SIN?AD O'CONNOR'S RELATIONSHIP HISTORY

The course of true love has rarely run smoothly for troubled Sin?ad O?Connor, whose latest unsuccessful search for domestic bliss is at least her tenth.

In addition to four marriages, the controversial singer has been involved in three relationships that produced children, as well as, she claims, three serious affairs with women.

The Nothing Compares 2 U star first tied the knot in 1989 to her drummer and producer John Reynolds and the couple had one son together, Jake, who is now 24.

The marriage broke down in 1993 and Sin?ad next began a relationship with journalist John Waters. Their daughter, Brigidine R?is?n, was born in 1996.

In 2002, the singer married another journalist, Nicholas Sommerlad. But the couple split after just 11 months and the star vowed she would never marry again.

Her third child, Shane, whose father is folk musician Donal Lunny, was born in 2004.

In 2006, Sin?ad began a relationship with Frank Bonadio, the estranged husband of singer Mary Coughlan, that produced a son, Yeshua Francis Neil, that December. They split in early 2007 but remained friends.

Despite Sin?ad?s anti-marriage vow, she walked down the aisle for a third time in July 2010, with longtime friend and musician Steve Cooney in July 2010. However, this one also lasted less than a year and the pair went their separate ways last April.

However, the singer?s relationships have not been confined to men. In an interview with Gerry Ryan on his Ryan Confidential programme, she said she had been involved in relationships with three women.

POST-WEDDING WEED

Sin?ad O?Connor?s claim to have searched Las Vegas for ?weed? after her wedding could land her in legal bother.

The singer said some people close to her new husband had been angered ?by a bit of a wild ride I took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me wedding night as I don?t drink?.

It is believed that her reference to ?weed? was to the illegal drug cannabis, or marijuana, which Miss O?Connor has previously admitted using ?now and again?.

The purchase or possession of cannabis is an offence in Nevada, subject to a fine of up to $600 for a first offence.

But far more serious might be the repercussions for the Glenageary-born singer?s music career.
For the U.S. authorities routinely refuse travel and work visas to those who have committed ?crimes of moral turpitude?.

These crimes include ?a violation (or conspiracy or attempt to violate) any law or regulations of a State, the United States or a foreign country relating to a controlled substance.?

In 1992, Miss O?Connor appeared to advocate marijuana smoking and in a 1999 Irish Times interview, she admitted to smoking ?weed?, saying: ?I do not take drugs ? I smoke a little weed now and again, which I told the social workers and they laughed.

?I do not take drink or any other drugs. Everybody knows that.?

Sedona cancer patients help others around world

A local oncologist conducted cancer trials that presented findings during an international cancer symposium in early December.

Several thousand oncologists, surgeons, patient advocates and patients attended the 2011 Cancer Therapy and Research Center-American Association for Cancer Research San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium from Dec. 6 through Dec. 10 in Woodlands, Texas.

Sedona oncologist Dr. Deborah Lindquist recently participated in three cancer trials at an international symposium in Texas. The symposium is the largest gathering of professionals in the field of cancer and cancer research. Lindquist started her practice in Sedona 23 years ago and is based out of the Verde Valley Medical Center Sedona Campus.?I was part of three studies presented there,? Dr. Deborah Lindquist said.

Dr. Paul Goss presented the finding of the first study, the Tykerb Evaluation After Chemotherapy, or TEACH, which started in 2006.

?In the TEACH trial, we looked at an oral medication to decrease the relapse of certain kinds of breast cancer. That trial randomized people to the placebo or the drug,? Lindquist said. ?It helped but not as much as we thought it might, but we had a very mixed group of people who had cancer up to many years prior to the trial.?

The second presentation revealed the findings of a 2007 study that treated women for Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2-Positive. HER2+ breast cancer is considered aggressive because it grows and spreads quickly.

?Since we now have treatments for that type of cancer, the patients do better than most other cancer patients so they have a good prognosis,? Lindquist said.

The third study looked at two different kinds of chemotherapy for patients whose breast cancer spread.

?I was the principal investigator. What we found was the second kind of chemotherapy had fewer side effects,? Lindquist said. ?We started this trial in April of 2009. These trials take a long time.?

The side effects of chemotherapy can include anemia, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, difficulty with memory and hair loss.

The Texas symposium is the largest gathering of professionals in the field of cancer and cancer research, she said. Nearly 50 other presentations took place over the five days.

?What?s really exciting, our patients here took part in the symposium through the studies and helped make cancer treatment better. That?s important because it?s curing more patients,? Lindquist said. ?If we didn?t have people participate in the trials, we?d still be using nitrogen mustard.?

Initially, nitrogen mustard was used as chemical warfare during World War II. As a treatment for cancer patients, doctors or nurses used the mustard as an intravenous treatment, she said.

?Treatment has come a long way, from nothing to radical surgery or burning the area off to more modern treatments that are far less invasive,? Lindquist said.

Lindquist became a medical oncologist in 1980 and started a practice in Sedona 23 years ago. Her office is at Verde Valley Medical Center Sedona Campus.

Lindquist continues her search for improved treatments for cancer patients, particularly breast cancer patients. Her office is participating and enrolling people for future clinical trials. One is chemotherapy trials for breast cancer patients who just underwent surgery. Two trials look at a new oral agent not considered chemotherapy to treat HER2+. Two more trials involve a not-yet-released biologic drug to use in combination with chemotherapy: one for lung cancer that has spread and another for colon cancer that has spread.

Other trials are available for pancreatic cancer patients to study ways to prevent nausea for patients undergoing chemotherapy for the first time.

?Clinical trials such as these offer renewed hope to cancer patients by providing them with new treatment options as well as intensive follow-up by our research staff,? Lindquist said.

Lindquist is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Breast Disease. She is also a member of Arizona Oncology, the largest group of medical professionals in Arizona devoted exclusively to cancer care.

?It?s especially gratifying to be able to offer this level of comprehensive cancer care to patients right here in the Sedona area, and to have their participation affect other cancer patients around the world.?

Mexican election law leads to complaint of bias

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The de facto presidential candidates for two of Mexico's three big political parties have been told they can give speeches, but can't ask people to vote for them or run campaign ads until March.

The third party hasn't yet chosen its candidate but election officials have said that its nominees can run campaign ads ? for its party primary.

This, one of the de facto candidates said, is unfair because campaigning in the primary won't just be seen by members of that party, but by the general public.

He, meanwhile, must remain silent.

Mexico's odd and strict laws governing electoral campaigning were intended to create strict rules in the wake of hotly contested 2006 presidential voting, which was marred by accusations of illicit support for candidates and a wave of unapproved campaign ads.

But the new regulations are creating new charges of inequity.

Institutional Revolutionary nominee Enrique Pena Nieto and leftist Democratic Revolution Party nominee Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador are both running uncontested and their parties won't be holding primaries.

Mexican electoral law says that official election campaigning cannot begin until March.

This has put the virtual nominees in the strange position of having sewn up their nominations, but having to avoid anything that looks like campaigning.

The ruling conservative National Action Party, however, has not chosen its candidate and the national electoral institute has said its three contenders can campaign for the party nomination until primary season ends in mid-February.

Peno Nieto, who leads in most polls on the presidential race, protested on Tuesday that the ads run during the National Action primary could affect the presidential election.

Pena Nieto's party ruled Mexico without interruption from 1929 to 2000, when it lost the presidential elections.

Lopez Obrador said he would accept the rules.

When Defense Secretary Leon Panetta opined earlier this month that an Israeli attack on Iran?s nuclear facilities could ?consume the Middle East in a confrontation and a conflict that we would regret,? the Israelis went ballistic behind the scenes. Michael Oren, Israel?s ambassador to Washington, lodged a formal diplomatic protest known as a demarche. And the White House was thrust into action, reassuring the Israelis that the administration had its own ?red lines? that would trigger military action against Iran, and that there is no need for Jerusalem to act unilaterally.

The Israelis must have felt the knife touch their back.
Obama has little troubel throwing small democracies under the bus.
Now, with their existance at stake, Obama wants to reassure his Jewish base that he is Israel's best friend.
Why they would believe any of this, is beyond me.

The media diminish the Republican presidential field in so many ways it wouldn't be worth noting if the stakes weren't so high But no way has proven more effective than their coverage of the GOP race as "Romney against everyone else," a distillation that negates the content of all the candidates' messages. The media first diminished the Republican field by focusing incessantly on who wasn't running ? Christie, Ryan, Daniels ? rather than on who was. Such coverage implicitly cast questions on the quality of the field.

Officially, the recession ended two and a half years ago. President Obama tells us the economy has been moving in the right direction since June 2009. Few will take solace in that statistic. Americans are suffering. For nearly three years, nearly one in 10 have been out of work. Almost double that number are either underemployed?working part time when they would rather be full time?or have simply given up looking. Historically in America, the deeper the recession, the stronger the recovery. By historical standards, we should be completing the second year of a booming recovery.

From the White House Dossier, emphasis mine: (Snip) With this one, Obama reaches a new milestone, having gone golfing 90 times in less than three years as president. That?s about three months of golf, given that the excursions generally take about five hours ? much of the useful portion of the day. It is time for Republicans to get serious. After flirting with just about every candidate in a large presidential field, is is time to come home to the one candidate who has the demonstrated ability to run the largest organization in the United States, the Executive Branch of the federal government; who has never been touched by the slightest taint of scandal; whose success in the private sector makes him the outsider that Republicans say they are looking for; and who has by far the best chance of beating President Obama: Mitt Romney. Democrats on Tuesday lamented Sen. Ben Nelson's decision to retire rather than seek a third term in Nebraska, fearing the move could give Republicans a crucial victory in their effort to reclaim control of the chamber next year. Nelson, the lone Democrat in Nebraska's five-member congressional delegation, faced a tough re-election campaign against Republicans who believed his support for President Barack Obama's health care overhaul and federal stimulus legislation would spell his downfall in the increasingly conservative state ? and help the GOP gain one of the four seats they must net to take back the Senate.

Crony capitalism is the most serious current danger to the American community, a threat not simply to government or the economy, but to our very way of life.? It is the worst such threat since the trusts and monopolies of the early 20th century, and in much the same way. Profit and sales rise at egg producer Cal-Maine (AP)

JACKSON, Miss. ? Cal-Maine Foods Inc. sold more eggs at higher prices in its fiscal second quarter, boosting profit despite rising feed costs.

Profit rose to $23.3 million, or 97 cents per share, in the quarter ended Nov. 26. That's up 53 percent from $15.2 million, or 64 cents per share, in the 2010 quarter.

Sales at the nation's largest producer of fresh eggs rose to $290.4 million in the quarter, up 24 percent from $234.5 million from a year ago.

CEO Dolph Baker said in a statement that egg demand was higher this year and that the company was aided by increased sales of higher-priced specialty eggs. The average wholesale price of a dozen eggs rose to $1.27 from $1.09, helping Cal-Maine absorb a 20 percent increase in feed costs.

Nigerian blasts mar pope's Christmas peace appeal (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI issued pleas for peace to reign across the world during his traditional Christmas address Sunday, a call marred by Muslim extremists who bombed a Catholic church in Nigeria, striking after worshippers celebrated Mass.

The assault on the Catholic church left 35 dead in Madalla, near the Nigerian capital. A failed bombing also occurred near a church in the city of Jos, followed by a shooting that killed a police officer. The blast came a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombs in Jos claimed by Islamist militants killed 32.

Benedict didn't refer explicitly to the Nigerian bombings in his "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "to the city and to the world" in which he raises alarm about world hotspots. But in a statement, the Vatican called the attacks a sign of "cruelty and absurd, blind hatred" that shows no respect for human life.

Elsewhere, Christmas was celebrated with the typical joy of the season: In Cuba, Catholics had plenty to cheer as they prepared for Benedict's March arrival, the first visit by a pontiff to the Communist-run island since John Paul II's historic tour nearly 14 years ago.

"We have faith in God that we will be allowed to have this treat," said Rogelio Montes de Oca, 72, as he stood outside the Cathedral in Old Havana. "Not every country will have the chance to see him physically and receive his blessing."

And in the Holy Land, pilgrims and locals alike flocked to Jesus' traditional birthplace in numbers not seen since before the Palestinian uprising over a decade ago, despite lashing rains and wind.

"We wanted to be part of the action," said Don Moore, 41, a psychology professor from Berkeley, California, who came to Bethlehem with his family. "This is the place, this is where it all started. It doesn't get any more special than that."

The holy town of Bethlehem is no stranger to violence. Like the rest of the West Bank, it fell on hard times after the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation broke out in late 2000.

But as the violence has subsided, tourists have returned in large numbers. On Saturday, turnout for Christmas Eve festivities in Bethlehem was at its highest since the uprising began driving tourists away. An estimated 100,000 visitors streamed into Manger Square on Christmas Eve, up from 70,000 the previous year, according to the Israeli military's count.

The Holy Land and the entire Mideast were very much on Benedict's mind as he delivered his Christmas speech from the the sun-drenched loggia of St. Peter's Basilica. The 84-year-old pontiff appeared in fine form, just hours after celebrating a two-hour long Christmas Eve Mass that ended around midnight.

"May the Lord come to the aid of our world torn by so many conflicts which even today stain the earth with blood," Benedict said.

He said he hoped that the birth of Jesus, which Christmas celebrates, would send a message to all who need to be saved from hardships: that Israelis and the Palestinians would resume peace talks and that there would be an "end to the violence in Syria, where so much blood has already been shed."

He called for international assistance for refugees from the Horn of Africa and flood victims in Thailand, among others, and urged greater political dialogue in Myanmar, and stability in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa's Great Lakes region, which includes Congo, Uganda and Rwanda.

After his speech, Benedict delivered Christmas greetings in 65 different languages, from Mongolian to Maori, Aramaic to Albanian, Tamil to Thai. He finished the list with Guarani and Latin, as the bells tolled from St. Peter's enormous bell towers.

In the piazza below, thousands of jubilant tourists and pilgrims, and hundreds of colorful Swiss Guards and Italian military bands mingled around the Vatican's giant Christmas tree and larger-than-life sized nativity scene.

In the U.K., the leader of the world's Anglicans, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said the summer riots in Britain and the financial crisis had abused trust in British society.

In his Christmas Day sermon, Rowan Williams appealed to those congregated at Canterbury Cathedral to learn lessons about "mutual obligation" from the events of the past year. He said Sunday that "the most pressing question" now facing Britain is "who and where we are as a society."

"Bonds have been broken, trust abused and lost," he said.

Britain's royal family, meanwhile, celebrated Christmas with one notable absence. Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip remained hospitalized after having a coronary stent put in after doctors determined the heart pains that sent him to the hospital on Friday were caused by a blocked artery.

Elizabeth's annual Christmas message dealt with the theme of family. The message was recorded Dec. 9, before Philip went into the hospital.

Wearing a festive red dress, the Queen said that the importance of family was driven home by the marriages of two of her grandchildren this year. Elizabeth spoke of the strength family can provide during times of hardship and how friendships are often formed in difficult times.

She pointed to the Commonwealth nations as an example that family "does not necessarily mean blood relatives but often a description of a community."

And in the United States, members of the loose-knit hacking movement known as "Anonymous" claimed to have stolen a raft of e-mails and credit card data from U.S. security think tank Stratfor, promising a weeklong Christmas-inspired assault on targets including the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, Goldman Sachs and MF Global.

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, as well as others in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

Willoughby United Methodist Church welcomes community for Christmas dinner (with video)

Maribeth Joeright/MJoeright@News-Herald.com

Helen Andraitis, right, of Willoughby gets a big helping of sliced apples from Bridget Douglas, 9, of Willoughby during the Willoughby United Methodist Church Christmas dinner Sunday.

Thanks to some last-minute work by members of the Willoughby United Methodist Church, Christmas Day was a little brighter for some Lake County residents.

The church hosted a community dinner Sunday afternoon. With plenty of volunteers and community members ? not to mention food ? at the event, it's hard to believe just two weeks ago it wasn't even planned.

Kim Hayes, who co-chaired the event alongside Marty Kreger, said it was the Rev. Don Perks who asked the church council to pray about doing something on Christmas for those in need.

While she knew it would be a challenge to pull the dinner together in a matter of days, especially over the holidays, the council nonetheless agreed it was something that should be done.

"We have people from the community who were alone for the holidays, who didn't have an opportunity or couldn't afford to make dinner, so we opened our doors," Hayes said. "Everybody felt this was something we were being called to do."

The dinner itself ? a full, traditional holiday meal with ham, potatoes, green beans and plenty of Christmas cookies ? was a blessing for friends Darlene Wilson and Jean Woods.

The ladies said they'd heard about the meal and came to check it out. Wilson, who lives in Willoughby, said it was one of the best meals she'd had in some time. The hard work of the UMC volunteers wasn't lost on her.

"These people basically gave up their Christmas, so we could have one," Wilson said.

Aside from the food, the sense of community and family was much appreciated by Woods, who lives in Eastlake. Continued...

"I felt at home; everyone was very welcoming," Woods said. "I'm glad they had some room in the inn for us."

There was more than enough room, and food, for everyone. By the time the meal ended, UMC volunteers were asking community members to take food home with them.

With one year now under its belt, the church hopes the community Christmas dinner will grow into a yearly tradition.

"We had an OK-sized crowd," Hayes said. "We hope this becomes an annual thing and continues to expand and grow to be even better in the future."

Users who ask for walking directions from the Shire, where the Hobbits live in J.R.R. Tolkien's novels, to Mordor, home of Sauron, are warned: "Use caution - one does not simply walk into Mordor."

The line is spoken by Boromir in The Lord of the Rings and quickly spread around the internet some years ago, adapted in various in-joke pictures.

The joke comes as the trailer for the new film adaptation of The Hobbit is launched, with the film due to be released next year.

The joke is one of many Google regularly hide on their web pages

Google's websites are well-known for containing 'Easter eggs' - jokes hidden by software engineers in pages for users to discover.

Earlier this week, Google users discovered a festive trick on their screens, activated by searching for 'let it snow' in Firefox or Chrome browsers.

The screen then fills up with snow and gradually becomes completely white, until the defrost button is hit.

Discovery of 2 Earth-size planets raises questions about the evolution of stars

Discovery of 2 Earth-size planets raises questions about the evolution of stars [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 21-Dec-2011

University of Montreal

This press release is available in French.

University of Toulouse and University of Montreal researchers have detected two planets of sizes comparable to Earth orbiting around an old star that has just passed the red giant stage. This planetary system is located near Lyra and Cygnus constellations at a distance of 3900 light years. This discovery, to be published by in Nature on December 22 2011, may shed new light on the destiny of stellar and planetary systems.

"The two planets, named KOI 55.01 and KOI 55.02, are on very short orbits around their host star," explained University of Montreal astrophysicist Gilles Fontaine and member of the Center for research in astrophysics of Qubec (CRAQ). "Having migrated so close, they probably plunged deep into the star's envelope during the red giant phase, but survived. The two observed bodies would then be the dense cores of ancient giant planets whose gaseous envelopes were vaporized during the immersion phase." The host star, KIC 05807616, consists of the exposed core of a red giant that has lost nearly its entire envelope, and in fact the planets may have contributed to the increased loss of mass that is necessary for the formation of this type of star. This has lead the researchers to theorize that planetary systems in general may therefore influence the evolution of their parent stars.

Twinkle twinkle little star

While analyzing the data obtained with the NASA Kepler mission to study the pulsations of the star KIC 05807616 (KPD 1943+4058 or KOI 55), an international team of astrophysicists from eight different countries noticed the intriguing presence of two tiny periodic modulations reaching 0.005% of the star brightness. As these variations could not be attributed to the oscillations of the star or to other causes, the presence of the two bodies orbiting around KIC 05807616 became the only plausible explanation.

The observed variations are the joint effects of the reflection of the star light on the illuminated surface of these bodies and of the difference in thermal emission between the heated day-side and cooler night-side hemispheres, modulated by the position of the bodies on their respective orbits. As a comparison, the situation is similar to the brightness variations of the Moon associated with its different illumination phases depending on its position relative to the Sun and the observers on Earth. For KIC 05807616, calculations show that in order to produce such low amplitude brightness modulations, the sizes of the orbiting bodies are likely comparable to that of the Earth.

One Astronomical Unit (AU) is the distance between the Sun and Earth. Since these planets are separated from their very hot (27,000 oC), intensely radiating host star by only 0.0060 and 0.0076 AU, extremely harsh conditions must prevail on their surface, especially in the star-facing hemisphere where temperatures could range between 8000 and 9000 oC. Conditions like these have never been found the planets that have been discovered outside our solar system. The discovery raises many questions about what kinds of life might exist in such hellish conditions.

These planets are referred to as Chthonian planets, could be the remnants of ancient gaseous giant planets perhaps like hotter versions of Jupiter that orbited the star when it was still burning hydrogen in its core, a long time ago. The envelope of these giant planets would have been dissipated during the immersion phase inside the star when the latter became a red giant. Only the dense cores of the planets, composed of iron and other heavy elements, would have survived this extreme episode.

KIC 05807616, a hot and compact sdB star, is all that remains of the former red giant: an active helium-burning core surrounded by a thin hydrogen layer. Forming this type of star requires the red giant progenitor to eject almost its entire envelope via a mechanism that significantly amplifies the normal mass loss from stellar winds. The two planets discovered around this star may have triggered such a process.
