The speculation has already started.
Which coach is going to get this job? Who would be a good candidate for that one? Do you think so-and-so would leave this school for that one?
Arkansas fans have been playing this game since the Razorbacks lost to Louisiana-Monroe in September. Plenty of others have joined in since.
Advice to those fans: Chris Petersen is probably not leaving Boise State for your team, so best to just move on from that wish.
Here are six coaches whose names will be popular when jobs start opening up over the next month or so.
? Butch Jones, Cincinnati
Jones is in his third season at Cincinnati after a successful three-year stint at Central Michigan. He replaced Brian Kelly at both spots and is 46-25 in his career, three times winning at least a share of a conference title. The Michigan native also spent two years working under Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia.
Could end up: Tennessee.
? Willie Taggart, Western Kentucky
At 36, Taggart is one of the youngest coaches in major college football. In three years, he has taken his alma mater from fledgling FCS program to Sun Belt Conference contender. He spent three years working for Jim Harbaugh at Stanford before taking over WKU. After a 2-10 first season in Bowling Green, he's 12-7.
Could end up: Kentucky.
? Sonny Dykes, Louisiana Tech
The current leader in the category of "hot coach." He's from the Hal Mumme tree that produced Mike Leach and Dana Holgorsen. If you're looking for a guy to rev-up the offense, the 42-year-old Dykes is your man. He is 19-13 in three seasons at La Tech.
Could end up: California.
? Charlie Strong, Louisville
After 10 years of being a successful defensive coordinator at South Carolina and Florida ? he coached two national championship defenses for Urban Meyer with the Gators ? Strong finally got a chance to be a head coach with Louisville. The 52-year-old has quickly turned around that program, going 21-12 in three seasons.
Could end up: Good luck prying him away from Louisville AD Tom Jurich, but Strong is an Arkansas native so ... Arkansas.
? Dan Mullen, Mississippi State
Another former Meyer assistant. The 40-year-old was offensive coordinator on those two national championship Florida teams. Mullen has been in Starkville for four seasons. It's a tough place to win, and he's now 28-17, and 12-15 in the SEC.
Could end up: Somewhere else in the SEC.
? Dave Doeren, Northern Illinois
The former Wisconsin defensive coordinator is 18-4 in two seasons coaching the Huskies. Doeren, 41, took over a good program, left behind by Jerry Kill, and won a Mid-American Conference title last year.
Could end up: Purdue.
____
Extra point
Texas Tech's Tommy Tuberville is an Arkansas native and former Auburn and Mississippi coach who will inevitably be mentioned as a candidate for SEC jobs. Art Briles of Baylor is another spread-offense guru, though the post-Robert Griffin Bears might make him look less desirable.

Yesterday we learned that People magazine won the rights to publish Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake?s wedding photos here in the US (while OK! magazine won the rights to publish in Europe) by shelling out a reported sum of $300,000. to the couple for the photos. Today, we get our FIRST LOOK at Justica?s wedding photos which will appear in this week?s NEW issue of People magazine. As you can see below, Justin and Jessica had a lot of fun posing for their wedding photos ? click below and check it out.
Judging by their wedding photo, Justin Timberlake was more than ready to jump into his new life with Jessica Biel, springing airborne with joy. When the couple of five years exchanged personal vows in a romantic Italian ceremony Oct. 19, ?it was a really special evening,? Timberlake, 31, tells PEOPLE in this week?s cover story, in which the newlyweds open up for the first time about their special day and share exclusive photos. ?It was a total fantasy experience,? adds Biel, 30. One cause for emotion? The singer-actor played the guitar and serenaded his beautiful bride-to-be as she walked down the aisle in a custom, petal pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown. ?It was an original piece I wrote specifically for the evening and for her,? says Timberlake, who wore a Tom Ford tux he helped design. The pair welcomed 100 guests, including close friends Jimmy Fallon, Andy Samberg, Timbaland and Biel?s 7th Heaven costar Beverley Mitchell, to the Borgo Egnazia resort in southern Italy for a week-long wedding celebration. ?It was a lot to ask of them to travel, so we figured we?d give our guests a good party!? says Timberlake.
Naturally, the full set of wedding photos and all the deets from the wedding will be featured in the new issue of People magazine so you might want to get out there and snap up a copy. I think it?s really very cute that JT composed and performed a song for Jessica especially for their wedding day ? that?s romance, y?all. To be honest, while I personally found this Justica wedding to be kind of ho-hum, I must admit that after seeing this first wedding photo, I?m very curious to see the rest of the photos inside the new issue of People. I think it?s a bit sneaky and brilliant that the People editors figured out a way to feature a photo of Britney Spears on the cover of Justin Timberlake?s wedding issue (the ONLY 3 people on the cover are Justin, Jessica ? and BRITNEY) ? well done, editors. What do y?all think of this first look at the Justica wedding photos? Are you curious to see more? Will you be picking up this issue of People magazine?
There is so much talk of the internet and how online marketing is doing wonders for small businesses that some people are forgetting the active role that traditional marketing once played and how it continues to play a major role for small and medium size businesses. Following on from the previous post? How does Direct Mail compare to Email Marketing, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to expand on how traditional marketing methods such as the press can take a businesses to a whole new level. Press can include the alternative, global internet method, but let?s concentrate on local press coverage for a localised target audience.
If you?re a SME (small and medium enterprise) and would like to attract an audience or customers from your local region, then a very good way to do this would be to market your business through the local newspapers, local business journals or even regional radio stations via advertising programs where you pay per insert or radio spots. Although, this is good method to drum up business through direct impact, a better way however, is by gradually building strong credibility through continuous editorial coverage.
Here are some tips and techniques to get coverage in your local press media:
Research
It really doesn?t matter where your business is based as there is bound to be a handful of goo0d quality press outlets that will give you editorial coverage. However, you will have to get to know your local newspapers, radio stations and journals well enough to see what kind of coverage they provide. Is the media good for your audience, what kind of stories and content they distribute, the distribution ratings and most importantly, research the readership or listeners of that press media.
Get to know the press
Get to know the people behind the press outlets in your region. Who writes the stories, who reads the news over the air and who the business editors are and what kind of coverage they regularly look for. ?In order to maximise your chances of meeting with the press people, find out what kind of networks they may be seen at, which business network groups attract journalists and if you do find one, go ahead and attend and build your credibility within the group. You may want to take up prominent roles within the networks in order to be more visible, but remember, those positions must be attended to with the highest professional integrity.
Don?t be afraid to introduce yourself to the reporters as they are just as much interested in meeting new people with new stories as you are in publishing those stories.
Research and write
For you to write the best editorials possible for your business, research what other businesses are writing about, how they are executing the finest stories and indirectly pitching to their local audience. Think of any up coming events you may be involved in through business, or how your business raised money for a particular charity? these would be great stories for an editorial. Published interviews are also a fantastic way to get visibility in the press, especially, if it is concerning the local area and affecting people in a particular way.
Remember, journalists are mostly interested in good quality stories and reports written to the the highest standard. So be clear in what you write about and the style you write in.
Keep the content very clear outlining any problems and benefits that will help the local community. Keep the headline short, but robust in terms of its immediate appeal. Don?t write lengthy paragraphs, but instead split them up into bite size chunks of content. Include related resources along with additional notes. Most importantly, provide quality photographs that relate to the editorial and your contact details along with any social media links.
Create a collaborative opportunity
If you are running a contest with give-aways or a competition that generates great PR momentum, then don?t miss out on talking to the press media. The press love to offer its readers an opportunity to get more interactive through competitions and sweepstakes. What about getting free PR? Most local press are happy to get involved by providing coverage if your business and you are doing something out of the ordinary and something beneficial on a local level such as, a marathon, charity fundraisers, community donations, sponsorship for a park etc.
Maximise the PR potential by negotiating a well deserved coverage for the best possible length of time and in other associated press outlets. We are not trying to take advantage, but merely, trying to get the best possible reach for all the hard work you will have put in.
Success stories
As the title suggests, a superb way to gain press coverage is through success stories your business has gained. For example, if you have secured a large business contract through a tender that might have involved fighting off large international firms then get the press on your side.
Awards and accolades speak volumes for your company, and if you have received any, why not tell the press? As a local business, this would be seen as a great achievement amongst the community and there is no better way of highlighting this then press coverage.
May be your business is celebrating 50 years in business? wouldn?t this offer an amazing press opportunity? Local businesses who celebrate their anniversary and longevity in business proves to be valuable for the local area. Talking about success stories is far more appealing for PR coverage through the press as it shows the vibrancy and healthy nature of the local and regional community.
Monitor and measure
Like any marketing effort, monitoring and measuring your response and momentum is absolutely essential. There is no point in putting so much effort and time into creating press PR if you?re not interested in investigating how the results came about and what made the least impact. You will want to identify what didn?t work as this you must avoid or refine for the next time. At the same time, the PR that has brought success, you will definitely want to continue and with that learning branch out into other areas of the press media.
So, monitoring and measuring is a necessary process on which you will want to spend quite a bit of time.
To summarise, getting press coverage in your local press media is a great method to get your local community talking about your business. Local can grow into ?national?, and thereafter ?international? if that is your intention. So, look at this traditional press medium as a viable way to grow your business. Yes, the internet offers some amazing marketing opportunities, but on a local level, press media is probably one of the most powerful tools for publicity.
What are your thoughts? Do you have stories of how the press has created positive impact on your business or ?even negative impact?

It?s not uncommon for someone to fail after approaching Internet promotion the wrong way, and then further tell others success isn?t possible. Don?t let your failed attempts stop you from trying. If success has not yet found you, then you probably haven?t been provided with useful information.
TIP! Make sure you have at least one unique thing on your site. This will most likely get you a ton of traffic.
It is always important to research various competitors if your internet enterprise is to succeed. Compare the web pages of your competitors to garner ideas on things that may work for you too. If you notice major gaps in the offerings on other sites, make them a point of pride on your own site in order to distinguish yourself from the crowd.
TIP! Think seriously about mobile marketing. When something goes on sale you will be able to tell your customers through a text message.
Create your website to be interesting, well constructed and full of content that is relevant. Your marketing campaign should center around the website and what it has to offer. The website should be designed well, be informative and interesting along with relevant. You can design your site to keep interest high and encourage customers to browse all the features you offer.
TIP! A useful Internet marketing tip is to make sure your customers know that the ordering process from your website is completely secure. People are hesitant to send out personal information via the internet so do your best to assure them that your site is secure.
To make your online advertisements more effective, make use of words like ?limited? and ?special?. Exclusivity is very attractive to people in general, and customers may feel the need to buy your product sooner than they would otherwise.
TIP! Don?t forget the little details on your web pages. The name of your webpage certainly should be on the top right of each page, you should also include a site description.
Some people divide their products up into sections, and provide options for customers to view all products on one page. Do not stray too far from the category in which your product lies. Functionality is key here.
TIP! If you want to build trust and to sell products, you need to offer a warranty or some type of guarantee. This helps give your customers security and shows that you stand by the quality of your product.
To be successful with Internet marketing, you need to have a nice website. Try various color schemes until you find one that looks great with your products. Your website represents your brand, so make sure it reflects the image you want to project and is user friendly.
TIP! Do not give up when you run into frustrations with internet marketing. If you stop, all of your effort will have been for nothing.
Make sure your company website has a simple, easy to remember URL. When you are setting up your company, you should always try to incorporate your brand name or company name. Of course customers can search for you on Google, but it is much better if they can type an easy-to-remember address into their browser.
TIP! Consider various methods of advertising for your website. Free or cheap methods to promote your business are to make a blog or use social networks to promote your business.
You need to research and treat Web marketing serious. Find an adviser who you trust and seek their assistance. Many of these same people have advice columns or will advise you personally for a fee. Choose a method that suits you, and use that method. Affiliate marketing is well worth your time and effort, so be patient, and you will see results.
TIP! Offer products at discounted prices to increase profits. This can easily be done by placing a discounted price next to the original price of a certain item.
When you are building your website, your goal should be to provide high quality, comprehensive content. You should concentrate on building the knowledge of your customers so they are informed about their purchase. Don?t repeat descriptions or use useless data with your prospects.
TIP! Try keeping your content up to date whenever you possibly can. Old, outdated information is going to give the viewer the impression that you do not care about your company, and therefore your customers.
A successful Internet angle to follow would be to make offers to your customers for added discounts if they happen to spend over a stated amount of money. For example, give a 10% discount to any customer who spends more than $200 at your store in a one-year period. This is a good way to get your customers to buy more of your products.
TIP! A little sizzle in your website design can be good, but don?t overwhelm your readers with fancy tricks. Once a visitor is at your site, you literally have 5 seconds to intrigue them and make them stay.
Affiliate marketing is all about solving problems. It is important to address problems first thing in the day. When you demonstrate the ability to aid others, clients are far more likely to become permanent customers who spread the word to their network of contacts.
TIP! Be certain to make use of textual emphasis techniques as you plan your site?s layout. Emphasize a phrase or a specific word by bolding, underlining, or italicizing the given text.
Are you searching for ways to market your business online? Make sure your visitors are tempted to give you their email addresses to build your opt-in email list. Try offering freebies or maybe having a contest that they need to use their e-mail to participate in. Potential customers are more likely to offer their email address when they will be getting something out of it.
TIP! If you have a website that sells goods and services, then it is important that you invest in third-party security for financial transactions. Many services exist that are impartial.
You may want to consider writing a blog. New content gets the attention of the search engines which will increase your ranking in their listings and lead to more traffic for your site. Writing blog posts on a regular basis will make adding fresh content much easier.
TIP! Include the word ?limited? in your ad. Consumers turn to the internet because they seek products outside of what the stores they can physically go to can offer them.
Talk with other businesses and retailers online to create bundle deals of services and products that you could sell for less in volume. You can link together accounts and make your sales go up. Booking agents that offer low prices on hotels and travel in combination deals are a good example of this technique. This tip is perfect for companies with supplemental or complementary products that are related to each other, but not being used by your competitors.
TIP! Think about using simple terminology on your Internet site. People like products that are simple to use.
This article has tips from experts in the industry and know all there is to know about marketing online. It is important to note that there isn?t a specific recipe for success. Were that the case, everyone would be on board. But with the motivation to succeed, you can turn this information into pure gold
TIP! Make sure that your site is filled with descriptive words. Use adjectives and use a lot of keyword descriptors.

Before the Polaroid Co. introduced the Model 95 camera in November 1948, photography was a slow process. Photographers who didn?t have access to a dark room had to send their exposed films away for processing and wouldn?t see their photographs for at least a week. In Instant: The Story of Polaroid, New York magazine?s Christopher Bonanos discusses Polaroid?s visionary founder, Edwin Land; the company?s amazing string of inventions; and its gradual decline. The interview lasts around 30 minutes.

On the night of the vice-presidential debate, both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert were hamstrung by their early tape times. Anyone waiting for their take on the Joe Biden-Paul Ryan slugfest would have to wait until Monday.
That didn?t stop Colbert from discussing it briefly, even though he admitted up front. ?I haven?t seen it yet. Nor will I ever ? it?s the vice-presidential debate.?
He focused on the complaints from the right that the moderator was Martha Raddatz. President Barack Obama was at her wedding 21 years ago to Obama?s law school classmate -- who she divorced in 1997.?
For Colbert, it?s enough to prove a conspiracy. ?He knew that panini press would pay off eventually for the running mate he hadn?t met yet,? the host said. And if the gift wasn?t enough, there was the implied social obligation to tilt the scales for Biden. After all, ?What woman doesn?t love doing a favor for her ex-husband?s friends??
Then again, who needs petty friends like Raddatz anyway? Colbert?s guest was author Chrystia Freeland, plugging her book ?Plutocrats, The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else.?
Of course, Colbert sees no problem with that trend. ?Why is that a problem? The super-rich have super-earned all their super-wealth.?
Freeland agreed that this was the attitude among her subject group. Some argue that the tax burden should be reduced because of their voluntary contributions to their favorite causes, which presumably are more appropriate than the government?s plan for their tax dollars.
?We may not need roads or schools, but we do need the ballet,? Colbert said.
?Exactly. You may not need air traffic controllers, because you have your own private jet,? Freeland responded.
Stewart, meanwhile, focused on the low-hanging fruit: the downticket races. Like his old friend from Missouri, Senate candidate Todd Akin, and his thoughts on how the female body can protect itself from becoming pregnant if a woman is?really raped.
?Yeah, the female body shuts it down if it?s legitimate rape,? Stewart said, of its magical powers. ?It can repel rape sperm! It can turn ordinary rocks into beautiful gems in minutes!?
He also noted the divergent attitudes towards military service displayed by Florida candidate Allen West, who touts his own work in his TV ads, and Illinois? Joe Walsh, who says opponent Tammy Duckworth talks about her own service too much in contrast to the ?real heroes? who minimize their contributions.
?Can I be there when you tell Allen West he?s not a real hero?? Stewart hoped.
Elsewhere on "Live!", Jimmy Kimmel suggested the participants in various presidential and vice-presidential debates could be kept within stricter time limits if they were only treated like winners on award shows -- by being played off with music. After showing an example of Vice-President Joe Biden being handled in such a way, Kimmel quipped, "He didn't even have a chance to thank his agent."
And "Late Show's" David Letterman decided to lease up on Mitt Romney, turning on VP candidate Paul Ryan instead, with "Top 10 Thoughts Going Through Paul Ryan's Mind At This Moment," referring to photos of Ryan pumping iron and wearing a backwards-facing baseball cap.
"It's like the Backstreet Boys or something," said Letterman derisively of the photo shoot.
So what was Ryan's No. 1 thought during the shoot? "Maybe now?people will take me seriously."
Pink Sith: Fundation Friday - Become Beauty Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation - Review, Pictures, Swatches
Fundation Friday - Become Beauty Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation - Review, Pictures, Swatches
Welcome back to Foundation Friday. ?This week I bring you a foundation from Down Under?.No You SICK-O's not that. I mean Australia. Become Beauty has a huge range of products including skin care and makeup. ?They have a few different lines of skin care, but the Makeup line is limited, simple and straightforward. ?I was sent a tube of the Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation. ?This is a multi-purpose foundation with 30 SPF UVB/UVA protection. It provides translucent coverage in a universal shade (more on that in a second), it helps protect, firm and tone the skin with anti-aging ingredients. The foundation contains?Zinc and Titanium, natural sunscreens,?DMAE?Extract which is an antioxidant and soothes the skin,?Mica, which reduces the appearance of lines and silica which gives a flawless look to the coverage. Guess what. ?My skin color was not in that "universal" shade range. ?But I soldiered on and tested it, so I could at least tell you how it works. I actually wore it for 2 straight days while I was home on the weekend. (I don't really care if someone at the grocery store sees me with foundation that doesn't match my skin tone.) Since my weekends consist of doing nothing but indulging Darthypie and catching up on lost sleep I was happy to test this out. ?As I said I wore this foundation for two days and getting it to look natural on my pale complexion was a bit of a challenge, but I figured out, on day 2, that if I applied it to the middle of my face, blended out and then used another BB cream on the outside of my face and blend inwards, this foundation could look pretty decent. I know what you are thinking. ?"Wait a second. How can you review a product after only 2 days of use. ?Don't you normally take weeks to test a product?" ?Yes. I do normally take weeks to test a product. ?I'll tell you why I only took 2 days in just a moment. ?But first... You all are probably wondering about the color. ?So here it is. Yup. It's pretty dark and orangey/yellow for me. ?I think darker skin tones would benefit from this much more than I did. ?I do not like that this foundation only comes in one color. ?That's just not cool. As for how it holds up. Actually quite nicely. ?Applied all over my face with primer on day one the finish was slightly matte and natural looking (despite the color) ?My skin did seem slightly toned and firmer when I was wearing this?but I stress that it was a slight improvement. ?The foundation did a good job of covering up my pores and not settling into fine lines. ?It looked pretty Awesome actually, despite the poor color match. It seemed to fade on my oily skin after 4-5 hours, but that is to be expected with any foundation touted as a translucent finish. ?By the time I figured out how to apply it with a BB cream closer to my skin tone I looked pretty amazing. ?I was ready to recommend this foundation for darker skin tones right away. But then it happened. ?I started to break out. ?I started to break out in painful cystic like acne in areas of my face that never break out. ?It was then I FINALLY looked at the ingredients and I saw that one word that strikes dread into my cold black heart. ?Cyclopentasiloxane. Yup. That dreaded silicone that is in countless makeup products. ?It's not typical to react the way I do to?Cyclopentasiloxane, but it is possible. ?Yup. ?This is one of the few silicones that makes me break out in huge hurty cystic acne. ?It sucks, because some products that are really awesome contain this ingredient. ?But, like I said, my reaction is not typical and most people can, and are, currently wearing this silicone on a daily basis with no issues what so ever. ?And that is why I didn't test this foundation for more than 2 days. So do you NEED this? ?I know I certainly do not. ?You might need this. ?If you don't have issues with?Cyclopentasiloxane and you aren't?any lighter than a MAC NC20 or Darker than a MAC NC35. ?(A MAC NC40 might be able to make this work.) this could work for you. That's a pretty narrow window of skin tones if you ask me but the majority of the US falls into this range. ? Perhaps as Become Beauty expands they will also expand their range of colors for the Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation. ?That way women of color and non color (like myself) can also benefit from this product. ?However, I will never benefit from it as long as?Cyclopentasiloxane is in it. ?It's not fair to condemn a product just because?Cyclopentasiloxane is the main ingredient. I get that. I know my reaction is not typical. ? So what am I going to do with a tube of Mineral foundation that is skin suicide for me? ?I'm going to give it to my buddy that doesn't have this reaction to?Cyclopentasiloxane and has much darker skin than I do. ?But what about you dear reader? ?Perhaps you too are yearning for this foundation because you have the ideal skin coloring and no issues with?Cyclopentasiloxane. ?Just because I personally didn't like a product for non typical skin reaction I experienced doesn't mean that YOU won't like it. ?I get that we are all special snow flakes and that everyone is different. ?That's why I agreed to hold a giveaway! The generous people at Become have not only sent me a tube of the Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation to review, but they gave given me one to give away as well! ?Sorry tho, this is open to US residents only. ?Just enter using the rafflecopter widget below. ?You can earn extra entries by liking me on Facebook, following me on Twitter, visiting the Become Beauty website, and more. Good luck to everyone entering! Ingredients: Water, Zinc Oxide, Cyclopentasiloxane, Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Hexyl Triethoxysilylethyl Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide, Aluminum Hydroxide, Stearic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG 100 Stearate, Glycerin, Mica, Cyclohexasiloxane, Dimethicone, Sorbitan Stearate, Silica, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract, Brassica Campestris, Aleurites Fordi Oil Copolymer, Cetyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Polyacrylamide, C 13-14 Isoparafin, Laureth-7, Lecithin, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit Extract, Aniba Rosaeodora (Rosewood) Wood Extract, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Peel Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Extract, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Extract, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Glycolic Acid, Dimethyl MEA, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, Tocopheryl Linoleate, Disodium EDTA, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Citric Acid, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77499, CI77492) a Rafflecopter giveaway
ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? University of Iowa researchers have previously shown that an enzyme called CaM kinase II plays a pivotal role in the death of heart cells following a heart attack or other conditions that damage or stress heart muscle. Loss of beating heart cells is generally permanent and leads to heart failure, a serious, debilitating condition that affects 5.8 million people in the United States.
Now the UI team, led by Mark Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., professor and head of internal medicine at the UI Carver College of Medicine, has honed in on how CaM kinase II triggers heart cell death following heart damage, showing that the action takes place in the cells' energy-producing mitochondria. In animal tests, the team reports that blocking the enzyme can prevent heart cells from dying, and protects the animals from heart failure.
Mitochondrial are the cells' batteries, generating the energy cells need to work. In heart cells, energy produced by these small cellular components fuels each heartbeat. However, when the heart is stressed, for example during a heart attack, the mitochondria become leaky and non-functional, which triggers cell death and heart failure.
"We found that activity of the CaM kinase II enzyme in mitochondria promotes cell death when the heart is stressed," says Mei-ling Joiner, Ph.D., UI assistant professor of internal medicine and lead author of the study, which was published online Oct. 10 in the journal Nature. "The findings might help us advance treatment of heart diseases and reduce mortality after a heart attack."
The new study shows that activated CaM kinase II promotes leakiness of mitochondria and increases heart muscle damage by allowing too much calcium to enter mitochondria. Specifically, the UI team found that CaM kinase II regulates calcium entry into mitochondria by modifying a special mitochondrial calcium channel. Too much enzyme activity increased the amount of calcium flowing into mitochondria, and this calcium overload triggers cell death.
Using genetically modified mice, the team also showed that inhibiting CaM kinase II activity in mitochondria prevented the calcium overloading, reduced mitochondrial disruption, and protected the mice from heart cell death during heart attack.
These findings provide insight into molecular mechanisms for mitochondrial function and suggest that inhibiting the CaM kinase II enzyme in mitochondria could lead to new and more effective therapies for common forms of heart disease.
"Because mitochondria also play important roles in other diseases in brain and skeletal muscle, for example, our findings could also have broad implications for understanding and treating non-cardiac diseases," says Anderson, who also is director of the UI Cardiovascular Research Center.

NEW YORK, NY (October 10, 2012) The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) named six of the most promising scientists as its 2012 NYSCF Robertson Investigators.
Each Investigator will receive a $1.5 million award disbursed over the next five years to foster his or her innovative research by expanding laboratories and by training other scientists. Three of the scientists were named NYSCF Robertson Stem Cell Investigators, a program in its third year, and three were named NYSCF Robertson Neuroscience Investigators, a program in its second year.
"These young Investigators truly undertake the most daring yet rewarding stem cell research. We are all honored to support the future investigations of these promising talents," said Susan L. Solomon, Chief Executive Officer of NYSCF.
The Investigators were announced at NYSCF's Seventh Annual Translational Stem Cell Research Conference, held at The Rockefeller University in Manhattan.
Designed to support scientists engaged in novel neuroscience and cutting-edge translational stem cell research, the two Investigator programs aid these researchers as they move beyond postdoctoral work and establish their own laboratories.
The Investigator award builds on the previous success of NYSCF's Postdoctoral Fellowship program, which is the largest program of postdoctoral support for stem cell researchers in the United States, and has provided funding for 35 postdoctoral researchers to date.
Marc Tessier-Lavigne, President of The Rockefeller University, chaired the NYSCF Robertson Neuroscience Investigator program's selection committee.
"With such an outstanding group of young scientists, we had an exceptionally difficult decision to make. We are thrilled to be able to give these awards to such a talented group of scientists," remarked Tessier-Lavigne. "We are confident they will become leaders in the field of neuroscience."
Tessier-Lavigne was joined on the jury by Anders Bjrklund, MD, PhD, Professor of Histology at the Wallenberg Neuroscience Center, University of Lund in Sweden; Catherine Dulac, PhD, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at Harvard University; and, Lorenz Studer, MD, Director of Sloan-Kettering Center for Stem Cell Biology.
The NYSCF Robertson Stem Cell Investigator program's selection committee consisted of Christine Mummery, PhD, Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Embryology at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands; Lorenz Studer, MD, Director of the Sloan-Kettering Center for Stem Cell Biology; Irving Weissman, MD, Director of the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine; and, Pete Coffey, DPhil, Co-Executive Director of Translation UC Santa Barbara's Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering and Director of the London Project to Cure Blindness, UCL.
"It is such a pleasure to award the critical research undertaken by these young scientists that has the potential to completely revolutionize modern medicine," said Coffey.
The new NYSCF Robertson Stem Cell Investigators are:
Deepta Bhattacharya, PhD, Assistant Professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Bhattacharya focuses on the development of stem cell-based approaches for the treatment of severe viral infection. His aim is to use stem cells to produce transplantable immune cells that would directly attack theses dangerous infectious agents.
Dieter Egli, PhD, Senior Research Fellow at The New York Stem Cell Foundation. Egli focuses on the generation of therapeutically relevant cells for the treatment of diabetes. His research on nuclear transfer, published in Nature in October 2011, was named the #1 Medical Breakthrough of 2011 by TIME magazine and lead him to be named as one of 2011's People Who Mattered.
Alexander Meissner, PhD, Assistant Professor at Harvard University and a senior associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Meissner has been a pioneer in the mapping of the human genome. He now plans to use stem cells to produce mature liver cells that will allow for improved drug discovery methods and that will enable transplantation therapies for liver disease.
The new NYSCF Robertson Neuroscience Investigators are:
Christopher Harvey, PhD, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. Harvey focuses on understanding the neuronal circuitry underlying short-term memory and decision-making. He proposes to study these important functions of the brain in the mouse by using virtual reality environments.
Michael Long, PhD, Assistant Professor at New York University School of Medicine. Long focuses on developing approaches that use novel methods in microscopy to "watch" the brain produce skilled motor behaviors. His model system is the production of zebra finch song.
Vanessa Ruta, PhD, Assistant Professor at The Rockefeller University. Ruta uses novel methods to trace and in turn study neural circuits to understand differences in how the brain encodes for innate (inborn) and adaptive (learned) behaviors. She proposes to use the fruit fly's learned and inborn reaction to distinct odors to solve this long-standing question of nature versus nurture.
